I've had two IBM Thinkpad computers in my wireless

Sent to Computer Experts November 12 11:17 AM

I've had two IBM Thinkpad computers in my wireless network along with two Emacs. 1 for 2.5 years and the other for 6 months. Around 7 pm both laptops stopped being able to access the internet. The Emacs (one is wired and one is using an ethernet bridge) work just fine. I took the two laptops over to a neighbor and neither could go online. After spending nearly 5 hours talking with Linksys and with Verizon I'm at a loss. I have discovered that dial up works and I downloaded Linksys EasyAid (which took 2 hours) but it didn't do the trick. I suspect that it's the laptops and not the router, what do you think?

Optional Information:
OS: Windows XP; Browser: IE

Already Tried:
Calling linksys and verizon and they were unable to offer a diagnosis.

Hello,

Two things. Firstly I really doubt it is the laptops, as both would not fail at the same time.... UNLESS there was an update (microsoft etc) done around the same time or during the same day for the both of them.

The problem with the think pad is separating the windows control of the WiFi from the IBM utility control of the WiFi.

What I suggest you do, is try to use the physical RJ45 network interface on one of the thinkpads, to connect to the linksys device. See if you can get the Ethernet activity working.

ON that note, do you get the SSID showing up?
What about the wireless connection utility does it pick up the network?

Let me know and we will work through it.

Cheers.

let me kno

Reply to Flagbridge-IT's Post: Have already tried connecting using an ethernet cable. As I mentioned, I also took both over to a neighbor's and could not get online. I then went to Starbucks and also could get online. I'm not a technician but I think that somehow the settings on the laptops were changed Thursday evening. My wireless network has worked fine for nearly two years. And yes both the ethernet and the wireless recognize the wireless network and they say that we're connected. Except for not being able to surf the net the readings look as normal as usual.

Reply to Flagbridge-IT's Post: Yes I can connect to the router using 191.168.1.1 either using the ethernet cable or the wireless modem. Plus I downloaded the EasyAid Link diagnosis tool which immediately identified "no internet access". It attempted to fix the problem but after a half dozen attempts was unable to. The linksys advisor walked me through connecting to the router and then concluded that the problem was on Verizon's end. Verizon said that the problem is the laptops since they checked on their end and since the computers can't access the internet via ethernet or wireless from my system or from my neighbor's or from Starbucks.

Ok,

Let try this.

With the laptop connected, (ethernet or wireless)

confirm you can get to the linksys web interface.
then I want you to put http://199.172.192.9/ in your browser

Tell me if you get to a web page or not.

(This is testing DNS settings)

Cheers

Can you try to get to it from the emacs and confirm you can get there.

I want to make sure I understand your network.

1 MAC via enetbridge to 1 MAC via enet to LINKSYS

LINKSYS wireless/ethernet to two laptops. Neither laptop gets to the internet.

We need to confirm that you have BOTH macs setup to obtain IP address via DHCP, and none of them have DNS entries in them.

(BOTH wireless and enet)

Can you confirm that please

Cheers

Reply to Flagbridge-IT's Post: Okay the Emac in the basement using an ethernet bridge timed out while trying to access 192.172.192.9. The Emac directly connected to the router using a ethernet cable took me to a website "Logic Communications." It's possible I don't fully understand your question but here is my set up. I have DSL with a linksys router with 4 ports. One port is used by the Emac with the ethernet cable. The other three computers including the Thinkpad Laptops and the Emac in the basement connect wireless to the linksys router. Since Friday night the two laptop stop accessing the internet at approximately 7 pm. Saturday morning I called Linksys and Verizon to get the problem resolved. After Linksys and Verizon pointed to each other I went to a neighbor's house with a thinkpad and then to Starbucks to see if I could go online. I could not. This morning I went to my office to use an ethernet connection that I often use while I'm at work and could not get online. Unless the router has changed the settings of the laptops, logically isn't the place to look the laptops?

Reply to Flagbridge-IT's Post: I don't know how to confirm that I have DHCP setup on both Ethernet and wireless interfaces or that I have "No DNS" settings. I have plugged the ethernet cable into the laptop. I checked "Network Connection Details" and it lists the DNS server value as 192.168.1 for both the wireless and the Ethernet connection. If you mean by DHCP setup both the wireless and the Ethernet access points indicate that the address type is assigned by DHCP.

Ok,

Confirm, is it listed as 192.168.1

or

192.168.1.1

REGARDLESS I need you to DELETE the DNS entries, and select Automatically Assigned.

I then want you to unplug the network cable, and plug it back in.

Oh one more thing, turn OFF your wireless adapter. There should be a button on top of your Thinkpad to disable the wireless device. (we dont want to double connect)

Let me know the results

Cheers

Reply to Flagbridge-IT's Post: okay I've disabled the wireless connection. Okay as for DNS, under status in the Linksys program when I signed in DNS is listed as three rows 0.0.0.0 LAN says IP address is listed as 192.168.1.1 but under internet it lists IP address as 0.0.0.0 Does that make sense. Otherwise you'll need to tell me how to "delete DNS enteries and select Automatically assigned."

Type ping 192.168.1.1 tell me what happens.

Having NO DNS entries is a problem. That is why you can resolve names, but it does not say why you cant connect to to the linksys router.

After you try the ping, reboot the linksys router and retry.
