How can I setup a VPN connection into my home ...
Sent to Computer Experts July 24 09:48 PM

How can I setup a VPN connection into my home computer? I have a Symantec appliance which has VPN capability and high speed internet (cable). I know I need a client but the current settings on the client don't seem to work. I'm confused about the settings (i.e. ID Type?, Phase 1 ID?, Gateway Address?, Remote Subnet IP?, Mask?, etc.)

Are these settings on the ISP side or on my side (i.e. my home network)?

Optional Information:
OS: Windows XP; Browser: IE

Already Tried:
On my VPN router (Symantec Security Appliance 320) I've tried different combinations of IP addresses for the local and remote gateways (otherwise identified as Local Security Gateway Phase 1 ID and Remote Security Gateway Phase 1 ID). I've also tried several combinations on the client end (using Cisco VPN client v.4.6.00.0045). No luck so far.

Hello,

You can find your settings by doing this:

Go to Start Menu

Click on Programs

Go To Accesories

Click on Command Prompt

Type in ipconfig

this brings up your ip address, subnet address and default gateway.

Hope this helps. Please click the Green Accept Button.

Thanks

James

My question is more regarding what are the correct setting that need to be entered to set up the VPN connection.

My VPN router asks for the local security gateway. Is this IP from my ISP or from my home network?

My VPN router also asks for a Remote Security Gateway. Is this from my ISP or from my home network? This Remote Security Gateway asks for something called Phase 1 ID. What IP address is that?

On the link you sent me, on the section "on the client", step 7. indicates that one must enter the IP address. Which is this IP address?

I have an IP address and a gateway from my ISP (dynamic); then an IP and a gateway from my router (static, assigned by me) and then an IP of my PC connected to the router (static, assigned by me).

It only makes sense for me to assign the ISP IP address in this case. Yet that doesn't seem to work. How can I specify my ISP IP address and then my router's IP address?. Any ideas?

Relist: I still need help.
I have a symantec security appliance. I'm trying to establish a VPN connection (which the appliance supports). I have a broadband ISP which assigns me a dynamic IP and gateway (241.xx.xx.xx). I also have an internal IP and gateway for my home network (inside the security appliance--192.xx.xx.xx). I wish to connect through VPN from the outside world into my network (192.xx.xx.xx). How do I configure the symantec appliance to allow such connections? I've tried a myriad of combinations for IP and gateway. None have worked so far. I'd like to know what IP and Gateway addresses should be used on both the VPN server and client. The previous attempt to obtain advise on this subject did not produce results.

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

In regards to setting up a VPN you need to have identical settings on the Symantec appliance and on the computer vpn client configuration that you are using to vpn in with.

Which basically since your ISP is providing you with a DHCP address every time your IP changes you will have to update the client configuration on the client side.

You would set it up with the 241.xx.xx.xx as far as the IP and every other setting must be identical for this to work and be able to communicate successfully.

I would recommend contacting your ISP in regards to issuing you out a Static IP address.

I will be honest i am not an expert in VPN configurations but i spoke to out System Engineer at work in regards to your issue and he is very knowledgable in regards to the configuration setup and this is what he has informed me. If you have any furthur questions in regards to the configuration i will do my best to assist you.

Thanks

Reply to Rita's Post: Hi Rita,
Thanks for your response. The configuration would look as follows:
             Local:          Remote Client:
Gateway:   241.xx.xx.1       241.xx.xx.1
IP:        241.xx.xx.xx      241.xx.xx.xx (DHCP)

However, my symantec appliance is "inside" the network. That is, the 241.xx.xx.xx only gets me to the cable modem. On the Symantec Security Appliance I can specify a subnet IP. However, how can I let the VPN client know it has to go beyond the 241.xx.xx.xx address and into the 192.xx.xx.xx (into my network)? It seems to me that I should be ble to specify at least two IP's on the VPN client (the 241.xx.xx.xx and the 192.xx.xx.xx). However, that is not possible. It only allows one IP. Is the 192.xx.xx.xx specified in a different way?

Thanks for your help.
