VPN
Sent to Computer Experts September 18 08:53 PM

First...I am not a computer programmer but really need help on this but not in programming language. I installed VPN on my computer when I had dial up and it worked fine - just very slow. I recently added DSL through HughesNet and have tried everything to get this to work but it will not connect. I even uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck. I just need to know what to do at this point. Thanks.

Optional Information:
OS: Windows XP; Browser: Other

Already Tried:
I have messed with just about every part of the VPN connect. I have used modify on every selection.

The first thing you need to do it check with your ISP.. It is VERY likely that they are blocking your ability to create a VPN connection.

Many residential DSL providers do not support VPN.

Hope this helps.

Reply to Stephen's Post: I already checked on the HughesNet website and it says that the Cisco VPN should work. I need to know how to make it work.

Ok- give me a run down of your current VPN settings and where you are trying to connect to. That will help me to figure out what is going on...

Reply to Stephen's Post: I am trying to connect into my work computer. My connection entry is our work place with our IP address. I am using IPSec/UDP. Under the Notifications, I am getting this message:
Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client.
Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding.
Not connected.

I have checked all the firewalls because our programmer thought this was the problem.

OK- you said that you had it working through dial up. Did you modify the VPN connection, or create a whole new one for the DSL?

Windows XP has a built in VPN client, are you using that, or are you using the Cisco VPN client?

Reply to Stephen's Post: I created a whole new connection and deleted my dial up. Programmer said to do it this way...I believe that I am using Cisco VPN client.

I would suggest trying to setup the basic Windows XP connection.

Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Create a connection to the network at your workplace.

Follow the prompts and let me know if this works for you.

Reply to Stephen's Post: I had already done this but I am trying it again...I am running into a problem where it says Public Network. I can choose "Do not dial the initial Connection" or "Automatically dial this connection" and then only "Century" is in the drop down box. Will either work?

Ok your getting that since it sees the other VPN connection and it is asking you if want to use that. Choose "Do not dial the initial Connection". This will allow you to setup a new connection.

Sounds to me like your computer at the office is not on, or is not accepting the connection.

Is there a way for you to check that?

Also if you are running a firewall, turn it off.

Reply to Stephen's Post: My computer at the office is up and running...I have done this every night for the last two weeks. I am not running any firewalls. I have turned them all off.

I am just very upset that I can't get this thing to work like it did for dial up.

Any last suggestions?

No.. sorry.. without more information about your companies network, and the requirements that your IT staff has in place... I am not sure where else to go with this.
