Hi and welcome to JA,
I would strongly recommend going with the .NET since Microsoft is dumping millions into this and I would suspect this will be the standard sooner rather than later. Below is a link on the benifits to .NET:

Reply to Andy's Post: can you tell me a little bit more of why you think this? i have been getting such a variety of anwers to this question. things i am wondering about in terms of whether LAMP is better than .net
-development costs
-ownership costs/maintaining
-making changes/updating
-whether or not i want to be "married" to the developer

does your answer stem from your own experience of working with either platform?

I appreciate any thoughts you can give me!

One last thing. I read the doc you sent me and it was interesting, but from Microsoft point of view. I am looking for a more unbaised viewpoint. Thanks

Reply to Andy's Post: it is product that we will make that our clients will license on a yearly basis. it is a guide for a manager to use that takes them and their direct reports through a year of coaching following a set protocal. does that answer your question?

Hi again,
Lets go over these one by one:

development costs: Lamp should be cheaper to develope. Since this is a open source software the cost should be just the programmer and the various tools that he will require to get the job done. .NET on the other hand is costly and will be quite involved in the production and the cost of the programs to design can be steep.

ownership costs/maintaining: Lamp is going to have to be hosted on a Linux/Unix Apache server for it to run correctly. There just is no real way around it. There are emulators out there but I don't recommend them.
.NET can be hosted on any Windows platform that supports IIS. This being NT/2000/2003/XP PRO.
If you are going to host this yourself this could be expensive. Most hosting companies offer both so this may not be a concern.

making changes/updating: These are going to be about the same for both. A person with the apropriate knowledge is going to be needed for both for updating. This is a wash.

whether or not i want to be "married" to the developer: Again this is about the same for both.

I have used both and find LAMP easier to develope but .NET is easier to deploy and have work on the first try.

If this helps please click accept.
Thanks
Andy
