audio file transferring

when using a file transfer program (ftp), for the transfer of audio files, is there any quality loss/

There is no loss of quality transferring a file over either ftp or downloading via a web page (http).The loss of quality you mention is a result of compression via an audio codec (the one most people are familiar with is mp3).The conversion of for example a cd to an mp3 is where the loss of quality occurs.
FTP transfers files bit by bit.The file you get is the one the original author intended you to get.That isnt to say the original author hasnt already compressed the file though - in fact he very likely has.
