why can I only open the very 1st file of a .rar. File?

Sent to Computer Experts April 27 07:11 AM

Whenever I try to open a .rar file on my Mac, I can only get the very 1st file to open successfully and none of the other sequential files Ex-part 2, part 3 will open.

Optional Information:
OS: Mac OS X; Browser: Firefox

Already Tried:
I have various file opening programs but whichever one works only opens the very 1st file and no subsequent ones.

.rar files differ from .zip files in that you can split the files up as you are no doubt aware.

To join a .rar file together, you simply click on the first file - assuming that all the files are in the same folder/directory.

When you click on the .r01 file for example, the result is the complete archive joined together.

Because of this, clicking on .r02 is not necessary.

So, in summary and to answer your question, part 2, 3, 4 etc. will not open because they are all part of the resulting file created when you click on the .r01 file.

I hope that makes sense and helps you out.

Reply to Steve Gardner's Post: If the 2 files are now joined together why can I still not see the information in the second file if I have done as you prescribed?

Only the 1st file with the .rar logo opens and none of the other subsequent individual rar files will open. Nothing happens and no error message ensues.

I have a feeling the files I am trying to open may just be corrupt.

I never know which appl. will open it. I end up trying every one. Sometimes when extracting only one file will successfully extract and the rest fail. As I've said in prior messages to the other techs trying to help me, usually only the first file is openable and the rest fail to open. Go try it yourself. Go to (Sex and Fun) Forum. Try to open some .rar video files with Rapid share or one other popular file sharing site and see how many you can open if there are say 5 or 6 contiguous .rar files and see what happens. See how many you can get to open. Not a very good percentage.
