I do not understand what sping or spin is in a disc drive but, yes, the light in the disc drive comes on whenever I put a disc into it for a few seconds and then goes off with nothing else happening.

I think this drive that my son installed is a cdrom and I watched several dvd's, not knowing what kind of disc drive it really is, and after I watched those dvd's, it will not switch back to reading any other cd's of any kind. My son sent me a disc with Nero on it that he told me to install. It then started reading my cd's but, it was after that when I watched the dvd's and it stopped working as a cdrom.

Dont know what to do?

I was wondering if Flagbridge is still online? I received a reply from that person asking me for more information concerning my original question about my computer problem but, have not yet heard back; however, that person said that they were online then.

Can someone please help me?

Hi,

Do you know what version of Nero you installed?

Does the drive still play DVD discs but not CD's?

Have you tried to play a commercial audio disk, If so does it play?

Also could you click start then run and type devmgmt.msc then hit enter, Let us know if anything has a yellow symbol over it.

Thanks

My son downloaded it onto a disc for me, then I installed it. When I installed it, I believe the name of it was Nero Express.

1. The Nero Program....I had previously uninstalled that program...while not thinking that I might not be able to reinstall it because of my disc drive problem but, I just checked the nero that shows up in the cache (as empty) and it says that the version is 2.10.3.2.

2. The disc drive does still play DVD's but no CD's at all...not even an original music cd.

3. I clicked on the start menu, typed devmgmt.msc and entered and yellow question marks are on the following: other devices and RAID Controller.

Sorry but I don't know if you also received the last bit of info that I just added to my reply so, I am sending it now because, I thought you might need to know this too.

I also just tried to reinstall the nero program and the green light on the disc drive started flashing for a few minuites and then stopped and is still steadily staying on without doing anything else.

Ok,

I am usually dealing with a few people so I am sorry if it takes a minute or two.

Coud you click start, programs, accessories, system tools and open System Restore.

Click next and then in the window with the calendar choose a date in BOLD from about 8-10 days ago and follow the directions to restore your machine.

This should rol your machine back to prior to this problem starting and wont effect your files or documents.

Let me know what happens.

Thanks

Eric...if you are still here...Sorry that it is taking me so long but, just in case I was to lose the instructions - I have been hand-writing them in my notebook.

I just read at the end of all of the instructions that it says: If a CD recoding program no loner works after you restart the computer, you must reinstall the CD recording program.

I just wanted to ask you, before I go through this manual process of deleting and reinstalling the registry entries, that if I have to reinstall the CD recording program....is that something that I will need the disc drive for because...you know that is my problem.

This whole process won't cause me to lose my whole computer would it?

I just don't know what to expect. I will await for your comment on this before I begin ok.

Thanks

Okay Eric....I started the process for backing up the Registry in Windows XP. I clicked Start...then Run...typed %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and clicked on OK (as the instructions said to do) and a box popped up that said:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore refers to a location that is unavailale. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

Ok....I don't know what disk it is referring to and I am of course connected to the internet and I did try again but the same box popped up and I could not go any further.

Is it safe for me to skip the back up procedure for the Registry entry or not?

I'm sorry Eric but, when you said "change the keys", I'm not following what keys you might be referring to.

However, in the instructions for manually delting the registry entries, it talks about "expanding" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. What does it mean to expand....?

Hi Eric....I am in Step 2 nos. 4 and 5 and in the Registry Editor...no. 5 of the instructions says that in the right pane (topic area) to click UpperFilters but I do not see that in there at all.

Don't know what to do at this point.

Customer (name blocked for privacy)

Sent April 05 8:58 p.m. (15 minutes and 48 seconds later)

Here is what I have done so far:

1. Start....Run...typed regedit then clicked OK

In the Registry Editor box.....expanded "My Computer" then expanded HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then expanded System then expanded CurrentControlSet...then expanded Conrol..then expanded Class...then clicked on 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318.

Then is when it said to click "UpperFilters" in the right pane (topic area) but, it is not there unless, it would be worded differently than UpperFilters.

That is the point I am at right now on manually deleting the Registry Entries.

Ummmm...well in the Registry Editor box that I have up right now...in the left pane it just has the list of numbers and letters that I chose from but, previous to that...I don't remember if filters was listed in there anywhere. Do you mean in the box I'm currently in or previously before I clicked on that long set of numbers and letters.....maybe when I expanded or double clicked on one of the other things?

Ok...I have now restored my computer back to Feb. 1, 2008.

I put a data info disc into the drive but, it still won't read it. It actually does nothing.

Also, does this mean that it is as if I never started the deleting of registry entry process?

That is correct. I just put my disk into the drive for Nero to see if it would read it and it is not doing anything, which means that I guess there is no driver installed for the disk drive to work properly or does it need one?

You see, I was having a problem getting it to work before my son sent that Nero Burning Softwar disk to me....I installed it and then I could begin saving data that I was typing but, the drive was at least reading the disks back then.

He also sent a disk that he had put Microsoft Word on for me and I also had installed it.

A few days ago, I went into the Control Panel and clicked on the D drive and ran a test on it but it said that it was working properly; however, when I clicked on Start....then Run...typed d: and enter, it would tell me to insert a disk when there was already a disk in it.

The Nero 7.10.1.0 CD Burner .....I guess it is called a driver.

I apologize but I think I may have given you the wrong set of numbers earlier for the Nero disk. I just found my page in my notebook where I had written it down from the disk info itself back when I was beginning to install it.
