why wont my old pc work with my new 40 gig hard drive

why wont my old pc work with my new 40 gig hard drive with WINXP imaged on it work. I upgraded the RAM from 32 to 128 and the pc will start but it hangs up when attemping to run XP. The PC is from 1999.
