Where to purchase MS Office Standard 2003 software?
Sent to Computer Experts October 12 10:32 AM

I need to purchase Microsoft Office Standard 2003 for a new PC we purchased for our office. There are so many discount websites offering and there is a big difference in prices. I don't know what website to trust. Any suggestions?

Optional Information:
OS: Windows XP; Browser: IE

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Thanks for requesting my help. It is an honor to have a customer ask a particular expert. Thank you.

There are several sites I use often, newegg is probably the one I use the most as do a lot of people. I'll check some of the other sites I trust to see who has the best deal and I'll get back with you shortly.

After researching this, I now see your delimma. I would say you have three options.

1. Go to Microsoft make Bill Gates even richer and pay a rediculous amount for what you can buy a lot cheaper anywhere else. The catch here is that if something happens, MS will replace the disk for like $20. If you buy the OEM/Upgrade software, they will NOT help you. Believe me I know.

2. Here is the link to lowest price software of the sites I buy from regularly and have no problem recommending this site to you. Plus they have free shipping. You always have to be careful about that online. The cheapest product is not always the lowest overall cost. But I imagine you might have picked up on that on Ebay. You can tell the less than reputable companies by how much shipping they charge.

3. You are on your own with this one. Everything looks okay to me, but I cannot vouch for this company as I have never purchased from them.

Just read the fine print. After you add the shipping to this you are not talking a lot of difference between this and option #2.

Please note however, that #2 & #3 will only come with CDs and registration codes. No manual. But the money you save from having to buy from MS, you can go buy one or just look up questions online...or well you know what I'm going to say next.

My recommendation: Go with #2, make sure you keep that disk and registration keys safe and someplace you can find them. I also, HIGHLY recommend making a complete image of your system. With an image you can go from your computer burning up to back up and running in about an hour. Less if you know what you are doing. More if you don't have another computer on hand. But we can talk more about that later if you want.

Thanks again.

Reply to Keen1's Post: The links are for upgrade software. I need the full version of the software not just the upgrade.

Keen, I am also still waiting for you to contact me directly regarding my website questions. I gave you my contact info via private messenger and have not heard from you.

The upgrade is just a marketing strategy. It is a fully functional version. You just don't get the "total" support unless you pay full retail price. Which in my opinion is totally unnecessary. You can have a nice external HD for making images and storing other large files. As you keep your disk and key in a safe place you will be better off. Do let me know if you want info on imaging. I consider it a must. I have three computers and all have images. If I get a nasty virus. I just wipe clean and reimage and I'm right back where I was before the inspection. That's a simple explanation, but it's not difficult. Just a little time consuming to set up. Then you can automate everything.

As for the other question. I am truely sorry about that. I had my hands full last weekend. May have more time this weekend. Please keep in mind, I have 5 kids, soccer games, birthday parties, etc...not to mention honeydo's. I still think a chat or posts on here will be the best method. I rarely have time to spend on the phone free of distractions. I hope you understand. If you would rather have another expert, I will opt out and tell the moderator to refund your payment. I do want help. It's that time is tough for me, that is why this site is so good for my schedule. I can check and update whenever I get a chance. Just let me know if you want someone else to help. I know a fairly new expert as far as this site goes but HE KNOWS what he is doing. Could probably do a better job than me on this particular situation. Just let me know. I know this has gone on for a long time and I imagine you are ready to get it resolved. Just let me know. I want to help, I REALLY to, but you might be better served by another expert. Just let me know. Just trying to be honest. Hope you understand. I will certainly understand if you want me to pass the question on. You are a good customer and deserve better service than what I have been able to provide on the website question.

Reply to Keen1's Post: Hi

Thanks for explaining the upgrade vs full version. I understand that I can get the upgrade. I appreciate your suggestion on the website to purchase software and to watch the shipping charges.

As for the website help, per your suggestion maybe I will be better served by another expert for this question. Please pass my question along.

Thank you.
