When I boot my computer it keeps going into stand-by mode. Why?

Well the computer just goes into stand-by mode. No picture on monitor.

Already Tried:
Changing the video card. I have tried to update, but computer wont stay on long enough to do that.

Reply to Lehigh Engineer's Post: Desktop, and yes it is plugged in sometimes it starts and is functrional for a while then it goes into stand-by mode. The only way to get out is to restart using the power button.
