(Not a Computer Question?)

Power button rapidly lighting on and off.
Sent to Computer Experts April 20 11:47 AM

Hello,

I have a desktop HP Computer that is 2 years old. We recently moved it to the family room and the kids played on it for a few days then I noticed that the power light was rapidly blinking on and off.

I could not power it off so I unplugged it and waited a few minutes after plugging it back up the power light continues to rapidly blink on and off and the computer will not power on, off or do anything.

Hi - Walter ---

First thing we always check is the power supply itself -- so what the blinking power light suggests is the power supply is failing -- so I would suggest you replace the Power Supply Unit -- then if it is still doing it, we know it is the Hardware --

If you would like more information -- or would like me to troubleshoot - please let me know ---

Thanks

Appreciate your time -- and Feedback ---

Hi,

Sorry I should have been more specific, I already thought that the power cord could be a issue so i did replace that already. So sorry for not mentioning that....I also checked the mouse, and all plugs in such as the keyboard.

Hi,

I would much rather you be though.....I am computer stupid when it comes to repairing them lol.

There is a square button that you push to turn the computer on and then again to push off. When it is on it lights up blue. When it is off it there is no light. The whole square is rapidly blinking blue on and off.

Ok.....as for the power supply sorry to be stupid here but what is that and where is it located, and how do I get to it?

I am going to go ahead and accept now to get it out of the way and if we can get though this without me electrocuting myself or the computer blowing up I will accept again and do the bonus thing

OK,

I will try replacing this, and if it fixes the issue I will go ahead and accept again and leave a bonus (It may not be till next weekend that I can get the part).

If this doesn't fix the problem I will reopen the question, if this is OK and we can try to figure this out. (Would rather not take it to a computer repair store).

Hi,

Is this what I need?

Dynex® - 350-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply

This is the cheaper model, they have a few more for well over a hundred dollars......I would prefer not to spend as much unless this is a piece of crap.

ok--

once you have the computer open get the serial numbers off of the power supply unit --

the 350 watt should be adequate for your system -- but it has to fit in the same location as the old one --

so once you have the serial numbers and make - -then we will be able to determine what you need --

Thanks

Can I take these numbers to Best Buy and have them tell me what I need? And is a cheaper model OK, The kids only use this computer a few days a week and it isn't used for much other then storing pictures and music for their ipods, and the occasional surfing.

Hello,

After doing some research on this situation and what all is involved I am convinced this is not a procedure that should be attempted by myself due to the fact that I know nothing about computers.

I thank you for your advice, I think I will just take it in and have it looked at. I went ahead and sent a bonus for your help.
