how do you transfer a hardback book to easy to read file,

my husband has been collecting and making his own car manuals for a while and now we want a laptop so he can take it to work with him and leave the books is there any way to go about filing and storing this info in an easy to read (tabbed type) format so he can simply type what specific specs he needs and the info will appear?
he doesnt own his own shop it is only for informative porposes and the shop software that you can buy is not what we need is there some sort of interactive spreadsheet or a adobe reader?
