I have a Dell laptop (2004). It is not wireless. I am currently connected to the internet by using a Linksy wireless router that allows me to network with the desktop in my home. My desktop is connected to the internet through satelite. I am planning on moving to a rehab facility which has a computer lab with internet access. I want to know how I can obtain internet access on my laptop while at the rehab facility. I am not physically able to go to the computer lab everytime I want to access the internet. The computer lab is located a long way from my room.

Optional Information:
OS: Windows XP; Browser: Mozilla

Already Tried:
I want to know if I can purchase a prepaid internet card that will fit in my laptop but if not I want to know if the same Linksy router will work at the rehab facility just like it works here at home

I do not know if the rehab has free WiFi. All they told me is there is not internet hook up in my dorm room but they do have internet on the computers in the lab.

I will be in rehab anywhere from 2-8 months.

I need a ball park figure about internet card cost before I decide exactly how much I am willing to spend.

Hi and Welcome to Just Answer,
Ok, let's take a look at this;

There is a couple ways you can go, you can see if they have a phone line connection in your room, this can then be used to dialup on a connection. There are free services like Juno that will allow you so many free minutes. Or you can sign up for a temp dial up with say like AOL, you can then get the local call number from the area of your rehab area.

I would also contact the rehab, see if they offer a wireless connection free or not, or a cable connection to their internet. If they do offer wireless for a fee I would just go to Best Buy and get you a wireless card for under $50. Then just connect to theirs. Same with the Data connection using their router.

Next you can use something like this

This is a wireless card that works through the cell services, you use it like a dial up, but then you connect broadband. These are not cheap, but they are fantastic. You don't have to use At&t, several companies have these, like sprint (http://www.wirelessbroadbandinternet4laptops.com/index.cfm ), T-model and so on. They come with the card, so that will be included in the price.

As far as a internet card if there is such a thing, I would say that it would be very expensive, most things like that is used by the units, you would be far better off using a diaup connection. You can join any internet provider that offers dialup, then search the area you are in for a local connection number, then sign into you normal account.

There are no telephones in the rooms. I do have a cellphone and my service is with AllTel but I do not know how the reception will be inside the dorm.
